Jenny Wade - Transcendent Sex

One night when developmental psychologist Jenny Wade was in her early forties, she lay down with her lover for an episode of what she thought would be normal sex. But what happened during the lovemaking that followed was completely unexpected. Wade, who had never practiced any form of tantra, was overcome by “an unusual opening”—mysteriously transported into another dimension of time and space.

This was her first encounter with what she now calls “transcendent sex.” After a series of similar experiences, Wade, who is an accomplished researcher and professor at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, decided to investigate this strange phenomenon, ultimately leading to the publication of her 2004 book, Transcendent Sex: When Lovemaking Opens the Veil.

In this interview, conducted by senior editor Elizabeth Debold for a feature article in the March-May issue of EnlightenNext magazine, Wade gives the lowdown on what she uncovered over the course of her research into the paranormal side of sex. She shares some of the most provocative stories from the book, including one about a man who received a transmission of cosmic consciousness during a surprising encounter with a dolphin that he called “the most liberated woman he’d ever met.” And in an effort to understand just what these experiences mean, Wade and Debold explore some interesting questions, including how transcendent sex relates to the traditional practice of tantra and the quest for authentic spiritual transformation.

Jenny Wade, PhD, is a research psychologist, an organizational development consultant, an educator, and a noted lecturer. As a principal at Nova Consulting, Inc., she works with multinational and Fortune 500 companies, helping them to achieve maximum organizational performance and optimal employee development. Wade is an associate professor at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, where she focuses the application of developmental theory and nonordinary states of consciousness to facilitate transformation. She is also the author of Changes of Mind: A Holonomic Theory of the Evolution of Consciousness, and Transcendent Sex: When Lovemaking Opens the Veil.
