Sex and violence. Population biology and the reproductive habits of mice (and Medievals). Osama bin Laden vs. Michael Jackson. Ancient bacteria outsmarting modern super-computers. With this incongruous cast of characters, cultural scientist Howard Bloom argues that the battle being waged by Osama bin Laden against Western culture (as personified by pop icon Michael Jackson) is not a battle between religious fundamentalism and godless consumerism. Says Bloom, it is a battle for dominance between two ancient reproductive strategies employed by life's most intimate component: our DNA. This talk is fascinating, provocative, and absolutely original!

“We are the neurons of massmind. The neurons who are making history in our time. We, the people who determine whether we descend to a new Dark Age or ascend to a new world of light, are literally you and me.” --Howard Bloom

BIO

Howard Bloom is a visiting scholar at New York University and the author of two popular books, The Lucifer Principle: A Scientific Expedition into the Forces of History, and Global Brain: The Evolution of Mass Mind from the Big Bang to the 21st Century. He is also the founder of three nascent fields of scientific study: paleopsychology, mass behavior, and omnology. During the 1970s and 80s Bloom was a highly regarded media consultant, publicist, and career strategist, employed by many of the most famous, and famously successful, rock stars of the era.

Bloom is a founding member of the Epic of Evolution Society, a founding council member of the Darwin Project, and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Psychological Society. In an effort to spark a reevaluation of neo-Darwinism in scientific circles, in 1995 he founded the international Group Selection Squad. In 1997, he brought together a group of scientists to form the International Paleopsychology Project, whose mission is to "map out the evolution of complexity, sociality, perception, and mentation from the first second of the Big Bang to the present."

Speaking on topics ranging from violence to his book The Global Brain, Bloom has appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, the CBS Morning News, CBS Nightwatch, CNN, BBC-TV, Spanish Public Television's Redes, and the Australian Broadcasting Company's equivalent to 60 Minutes. His writings have been published in The Washington Post, Wired, EnlightenNext magazine, The Village Voice, Cosmopolitan, New Ideas in Psychology, and many others.

Bloom studied at New York University, graduating magna cum laude. In his time in the mass media industry, he worked with such media giants as Sony, NBC-TV, CBS, Warner Brothers, and Disney. His clients in public relations and career strategy included Michael Jackson, Prince, Bette Midler, John Mellencamp, Bob Marley, David Byrne, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, George Michael, Lionel Richie, Hall & Oates, Kool and the Gang, the Simon & Garfunkel Reunion Tour, the 25th Anniversary of the Beatles Invasion of the United States, Queen, AC/DC, Kiss, Aerosmith, Genesis, Phil Collins, Styx, Supertramp, REO Speedwagon, Joan Armatrading, ZZ Top, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run DMC, Amnesty International, Farm Aid, and a number of major films from Paramount, Disney, Warner Brothers, and New Line Cinema.
