In the mysterious world of quantum physics, nothing is quite as it seems. And for those unschooled in the ways of tangled hierarchies, retrocausality, and collapsing wave functions, it can be a rather disorienting place. But this complex and subtle territory is where theoretical physicist Amit Goswami (best known for his role in the film What the Bleep Do We Know!?) is most at home.
Goswami has a fundamental disagreement with Darwinian theory. In fact, he believes that Darwin wasn’t talking about evolution at all, but rather was describing what Goswami calls “gradual adaptation.” To Goswami, evolution doesn’t happen gradually—or randomly—but instead happens in creative leaps in consciousness that emerge from the “quantum field of possibilities.” Over the course of the conversation, Goswami explains his theory in fascinating detail and shares his vision for the next stage of evolution, which he says is currently just an intuition at the leading edge of human consciousness.
Amit Goswami, PhD is professor emeritus in the theoretical physics department of the University of Oregon, where he has served since 1968. He is a pioneer in the new paradigm of science called “science within consciousness.”
Best known for his role in the film What the Bleep Do We Know!?, Goswami is also an accomplished author. His highly successful academic textbook Quantum Mechanics is used in universities throughout the world, and his many popular books exploring the relationship between quantum physics and consciousness, including The Self-Aware Universe, Physics of the Soul, and Creative Evolution, have been widely read.
Goswami’s ideas about physics, evolution, and consciousness will be featured in the 2009 documentary The Quantum Activist.
